Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21st 1959. The state is affectionately known as the Aloha state. Hawaii is really a series of 8 islands which are named Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii.
The word Hawaii probably comes from the native word for homeland which is "Owhyhee".
