Milwaukee is the largest city in the state and a major center for manufacturing, but is continuing to expand into the service and financial sectors as well.
Milwaukee is a major manufacturing and shipping center in the Midwest. Primary manufacturing consists of engines, tractors, beer, various machinery, and other equipment. As a whole, Milwaukee is known for its many blue-collar workers; only San Jose has a higher percent of their workforce involved in manufacturing jobs. However, service jobs continue to grow in the city and are currently the fastest growing area of employment in the city. Major companies headquartered in the city include Briggs & Stratton, Harley-Davidson, Johnson Controls, Manpower Inc., Marshall & Ilsley, and Northwestern Mutual. Several financial companies also reside in Milwaukee, all of which keep Milwaukee movers busy.
History:
The Milwaukee area was long inherited by Indian tribes before any settlers arrived. Milwaukee is thought to mean "The Good Land" or "gathering place by the water" in certain Indian languages. Solomon Juneau, of France, founded the area in 1818. He founded a city in 1833 and in 1846 he joined other nearby towns and incorporated the city of Milwaukee. In the following years, a large German population moved to the area that is still very present today. This contributed towards many years of socialist run government during the 1900's.
During the 1960's, social tensions arose in the city and many demonstrations took place. The city was hit hard economically in the early 1980's because of a downturn in manufacturing. However, in the later part of the decade, the city returned to prosperity with a resurgence of industry in the area.
Tourism:
General Mitchell International Airport is ten miles from the city. Professional sports teams include the baseball Brewers and basketball Bucks, among several other small professional and collegiate teams. The numerous breweries are popular in Milwaukee and include many available tours. The Milwaukee Art Museum is the most recognized museum in the city. The Florentine Opera and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra also reside in the city.
Several large parks that attract many visitors include Washington Park, Mitchell Park, Juneau Park, and Estabrook Park. Additional destinations in Milwaukee include Milwaukee County Zoo, the Milwaukee Public Museum, as well as a Frank Lloyd Wright designed church.
